The stone foundations and cellars of the building go back at least to the 14th century. The three-storey half-timbered building above received its present form in the 17th century. The roof turret was probably first put on in the early 19th century. From the late 18th century to the early 20th century, the baroque framework was covered by wooden planks and these were plastered. In the late 1930s, the half-timbered structure was exposed again and renovated. Further renovations of the building took place in the 1950s, 1970s and 1990s as well as in the first decade of the 21st century. Most recently, careful modernization with careful respect for monument protection played a central role.

Private and public use

For several centuries the building served as the town hall. In the late Middle Ages, the previous building was the seat of a wine master, then the village mayor. Since the 1890s, the house was temporarily in private ownership, both for residential purposes and as a restoration; In addition, around 1900 there was a butcher's shop in the building. The name “Ratskeller” became established at the latest during this time, but probably goes back to the beginning of its use as a town hall and wine bar.

In 1956, the then independent municipality of Neumorschen bought the building back. Since then, the Ratskeller has been used most of the time for gastronomic purposes, but it also housed the community library at times. With the incorporation of the village of Neumorschen into the new overall municipality of Morschen in 1974, the building finally lost all administrative functions. The adjoining, former stables ("Reesestall") were, however, converted into a community hall from 1984 and included in the gastronomic concept. The building was used as a restaurant with changing tenants. The town of Morschen has been looking for a new tenant for the traditional restaurant since 2018.
