Council Mill Building

The Ratsmühle is a former watermill in Soltau, Lower Saxony . The mill building is a listed building .

history

Since at least 1384 the mill has been known as "nye Mölen" (new mill) at the confluence of the Böhme and Soltau rivers on the Böhmheide in Soltau. There was a legal dispute over several years between the von der Heide family and the city over the ownership of the mill, which was decided in 1621 by the Imperial Court of Justice in Speyer in favor of the city. On January 27, 1625 there was a settlement between the parties. The mill was owned by the city until 1817, hence the name Ratsmühle. Then the city sold it to the miller Barenscher because of its poor condition. The adjacent building was probably built in 1890 and is now a listed building. After the end of World War II were in it agricultural enterprises settled. In 1963 the mill was stopped.

Boehmewehr

Until 2004 the mill building was used as a sales point for agricultural products. It has been empty since then. In order to protect the building from deterioration, the “Rettet die Ratsmühle” interest group was set up in 2007 and is looking for a new user. The establishment of a museum or the accommodation of associations is planned.

For around 50 years, the so-called Böhme weir regulated the water level of the two rivers. From June 2010 this was replaced by an approximately 85-meter-long invert to simplify the regulation. In the three-month construction period, the water of the Böhme was diverted, the construction costs amounted to 510,000 euros, 90 percent of which was borne by the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation .
