Ratzeputz
Ratzeputz is the brand name of a schnapps from CW Baland & Langebartels in Celle . Flavor carriers are extracts from the ginger root , which are also said to have a beneficial effect on the stomach.
Today's (2006) Ratzeputz only contains 58 % alcohol by volume ; in the past, higher alcohol contents were common. The ingredients, perceived by some consumers as spicy, ensure a long-lasting taste in the mouth and throat.
In 1877, Ratzeputz was developed by Peter Weidmann, who was a distiller in Celle . There, in the entire territory of the Lüneburg Heath and the surrounding area, the Ratzeputz is a well-known high-proof spirit specialty . However, its intense but fine ginger taste has also given it a considerable international reputation. Originally manufactured by "CW Baland & Langebartels", Ratzeputz is now manufactured under license from Schwarze & Schlichte in Oelde .
Until a few years ago, the Ratzeputz was burned in the middle of downtown Celle. The lack of the weekly pungent smell in town is due to the relocation of production to an industrial area in Westercelle . The sales point directly at the distillery (between Neuer Straße and Zöllnerstraße) in the city center has also been closed, and the variations in bottle sizes have been restricted. The original products are easy to get, at least in Celle.
Especially in the Lüneburg Heath, a mixture with the herbal schnapps Heidegeist is widespread under the name 108er , which can be traced back to the addition of the alcohol content of 58 and 50 percent.
