The Tyszkiewicz Palace in Raudondvaris

Raudondvaris ( Polish Czerwony Dwór , German  Rothof ) is a place in Lithuania west of Kaunas , despite its over 4000 inhabitants statistically listed as a village. It is the center of the administrative district of the same name in the Kaunas district .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1392 in a chronicle of the Teutonic Knight Order . The old castle was rebuilt after the Battle of Tannenberg (1410) and is the property of the king. In 1549 King Sigismund II. August donated the castle to his wife Barbara Radziwiłł . After their death the castle fell into disrepair.

Tyszkiewicz Palace

In 1615 the Tyszkiewicz Palace, a Renaissance / neo-Gothic building made of red bricks , was built on the higher bank of the Nevėžis . The palace, commonly known as the “castle”, is surrounded by a park and a no longer used palm house and was known for its rich art collection, which included works by da Vinci , Caravaggio , Rubens and del Sarto . The palace belonged to the Tyszkiewicz family until World War I , when it was nationalized by the Lithuanian government and converted into a school.

In the Second World War severely damaged the Tyszkiewicz Palace was restored in the 1980s.

Theresienkirche

The Church of St. Theresa

Another notable building is the Basilica of St. Theresa , donated by Benedykt Tyszkiewicz and rebuilt in the 20th century . It contains altars with paintings by Michał Elwiro Andriolli and the tombstones of the Tyszkiewicz family.
