Scuffle

Round rack with 10 feeding places

Fights are racks for hay, straw or grass. They are mostly attached to the wall, but can also be found free-standing in game preservation areas and on pastures. They are made of wood, metal or plastic. The animals can pull out the roughage with their mouths between the vertical bars of the rack . There are scuffles in stables for example with goats , cows and horses , in cages for guinea pigs and rabbits , but also free-standing for horses, sheep and roe deer . Christian Gebhard Nordmann invented the slider rack in 1811 to save space in his sheep pens.

etymology

The term Raufe comes from Old High German (ahd.) Rouffen, Middle High German (mhd.) Roufen , belongs to related words - got. Raupjan , mniederl. roopen , aengl . riepan to the often expanded root * reu- : "tear, break, tear out, pluck". In German, 'to raufen' has also been used in the sense of "wrangling, being handcuffed" (originally: "to tear your hair") since the mhd. (See scuffle ). Already in the late Middle Ages , the feed rack for animals was called roufe .

Hay racks in stables

In the past, many horse stables had hay racks . The wall racks were practical, but mostly too high and the horses had to push through their backs ( risk of swaybacks! ), Where they also inhaled hay dust. Low hay racks or hay nets proved to be cheaper .

There are hardly any hay racks in cow stalls because the cows put the hay on the floor.

Hay racks in cages

The guinea pig and rabbit cages must not have tips and must be securely fastened. The distances between the bars in the paddocks must not be too wide, otherwise the animals could get stuck with their heads in them (especially young animals). When hay is distributed in the cage without a hayrack, it becomes dirty and trampled and is hardly suitable for consumption.

Hay racks in the wild

empty feeder in summer

In hunting areas hayracks be made of wood to feed the deer in times of emergency ( Hege used). Sometimes there is a feed trough under the hay rack and a roof over it to protect the feed from precipitation . Depending on the size, there is room for four to eight animals.
