Raul Seixas (born June 28, 1945 in Salvador da Bahia , † August 21, 1989 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian musician.

Life

On June 28, 1945 at 8 a.m. Raul Varella Seixas, who would later be called Raul Santos Seixas, was born to Maria Eugênia Seixas in Salvador, Bahia. 3 years later his brother, Plínio Santos Seixas, was also born in Salvador / Bahia. He began to be interested in his father's library at an early age, but at the same time developed an aversion to the school, which "did not teach anything that he wanted to know".

He began his musical career in 1964 in the band The Panters , which later became known as Raulzito e Os Panteras . Many of his lyrics were written by the then unknown bestselling author Paulo Coelho . His first LP did not get any particular media resonance and sold extremely poorly, while the second album, recorded by the CBS , relieved his relationship with the record company. The fourth LP should finally give Raul Seixas the big breakthrough. Meanwhile he was arrested for being involved in the alternative movement ("Sociedade Alternativa") under the Brazilian military dictatorship and tortured by the DOPS (Departamento de Ordem Política e Social - Department of Political and Social Order), whereupon he fled into exile. However, the success of his LP and Gita , which earned him a gold record, forced him to return to Brazil.

Raul brought out another album on the CBS , which was not to be a great success, and three more albums on the WEA , which were celebrated by the public, but at the same time were little loved by the critics.

The last record he was to release was made in collaboration with Marcelo Nova and came out two days before his death. Raul Seixas died of heart failure at 9:00 a.m. on August 21, 1989: his alcoholism, made worse by the fact that he was a diabetic, caused fatal inflammation of the pancreas . Raul Seixas had five wives and three daughters during his lifetime.

Even 20 years after his death, he is regarded by many Brazilians as a legend of rock and anarchy in Brazil and is consistently successful. The majority of his albums have been released on CD and he is consistently popular with adults and teenagers alike. Statistically unproven, but obvious is the claim that he is no less well known among the Brazilian people than his great idol, Elvis Presley.
