Rawak Vihara , the ruins of the Buddhist monastery town of Rawak ( Chinese  热 瓦克 佛寺 遗址 , Pinyin Rèwǎkè Fósì Yízhǐ ), are located about 40 km northeast of Hotan in the Taklamakan Desert, in Lop County in the Hotan administrative district of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the west of the People's Republic of China .

The attachment

In the center there was a 12 m high stupa with a cruciform, rectangular floor plan. It probably belongs to the reliquary type. The complex is reminiscent of stupas of the Gandhara style in Peshawar and Balkh . The archaeologist Aurel Stein , who toured the site in 1901 and 1906, found remains of 91 Buddha and Bodhisattva figures , often of considerable size, often destroyed by the wind , and these too are reminiscent of those from Gandhara. Wall paintings were also discovered there. Chinese archaeologist Huang Wenbi inspected the site in 1929.

Rawak Vihara is dated to the Southern and Northern Dynasties and was part of the Kingdom of Hotan . Sculpture motifs were taken up again in Dunhuang , e.g. B. an aureole formed from radially arranged Buddhas around a central figure. The site has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China in Xinjiang (5-140) since 2001 . Some works of art from Rawak can be found in the Trinkler collection in the Überseemuseum Bremen .
