Raymond L. Birdwhistell (born September 29, 1918 in Cincinnati , Ohio , † October 19, 1994 ) was an American anthropologist , ethnologist and linguist .

Ray Birdwhistell studied at Miami University in Oxford ( BA , 1940), Ohio State University ( MA , 1941) and the University of Chicago ( Ph.D. , 1951). He was an important exponent of cultural relativism , which assumes that emotional forms of expression are cultural. Birdwhistell was a student of Margaret Mead .
