Ray Wylie Hubbard
Ray Wylie Hubbard (born November 13, 1946 in Soper , Oklahoma ) is an American country musician .
Beginnings
Hubbard grew up in Oak Cliff , Texas . He attended the same school as Michael Martin Murphey , with whom he temporarily played in a folk group. After graduating from college, he moved to Red River , New Mexico . Here he founded the band Ray Wylie Hubbard & The Cowboy Twinkies .
Career
In the early 1970s he wrote the song that would make him famous: Up Against The Wall, Redneck Mother . The ironic song became a hit in the version by Jerry Jeff Walker . Hubbard was suddenly in the spotlight.
Records were produced by various labels, but they did not sell well. His mix of country, folk and rock elements was not well received by either rock or country audiences. He joined the Austin scene in the mid-1970s . He later moved to Nashville . In 1979 he took over Walker's band. A lengthy dry spell followed, which could only be overcome after he broke away from alcohol and other drugs . With the albums Lost Train Of Thought (released 1992) and Loco Gringo's Lament (released 1994) he made a new musical start.
Trivia
In the sixth episode of the US TV series Rectify , the song "Drunken Poets Dream" from the 2010 album "A: Enlightenment B: Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C) (Bordello)" can be heard in the background during a restaurant scene. The number was written by Hayes Carll . Hubbard is not related to the rockabilly musician Orangie Ray Hubbard .
