Life

Chiao moved to the United States as a child in 1947, grew up in New York City and studied electrical engineering and then physics at Princeton University from 1957 (bachelor's degree in 1961), among others with John Archibald Wheeler . He originally worked in theoretical physics at Wheeler, but then switched to experimental quantum optics at MIT, where he received his doctorate in 1965 under laser pioneer Charles H. Townes (on one of the first observations of stimulated Brillouin scattering ). In 1967 he became an assistant professor at MIT and a Sloan Research Fellow . In the same year he went to the University of California, Berkeley , where he was a professor until 2006. In 2006 he went to the University of California, Merced , founded the previous year, to do gravitational wave research. There he is now Professor Emeritus.

In 1993 he measured (after previous experiments by Günter Nimtz in the microwave range) with his doctoral student Aephraim Steinberg the tunnel speed (about 1.7 times the speed of light) for individual photons. He was also the first to demonstrate the Berry phase in optical experiments .

In 2006 he received the Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics and in 1993 the Einstein Prize for Laser Science.
