reception

According to Andrey Henkin, who reviewed the album on All About Jazz , the music on Rebus is fascinating for its vertical nature. With Luther Gray's solid and expansive drums, Morris and Vandermark play against each other, with the former working vertically while the latter moving horizontally. This creates a tension that contrasts Vandermark's game in his own group, in which the forward movement creates a large part of the momentum, according to the author. On the six tracks, the music grows outwards, almost in a circle, more representative than declarative, in keeping with the title. Vandermark can only be heard on the tenor saxophone, a deferential attitude, says Henkin, since his baritone saxophone can dominate most musical processes.

The critic of the Free Jazz Blog said that he does not fully understand this music. “Here they play hard, very atonal and uncompromising, but I'm not sure what they want to achieve or what all of this leads to.” Strong musicians may be a necessary requirement for great music, but not sufficient, as will be shown here again .
