Law and Politics (RuP) is a legal policy specialist journal in which articles, book reviews and information on German and European legal policy are published. It appears quarterly.

Goal setting

The original goal of RuP was to accompany the legal reform movement in the 1960s in a journalistic way. Legal training, the image of judges in public and the judiciary itself should be adapted to the requirements of the Basic Law and democratized. Corresponding to this objective, legal policy, especially as far as the internal reform of the judiciary was concerned, was defined as actively pursued, shaping social policy, which is why the journal was interdisciplinary from the start. The title of the magazine also takes into account the fact that law and politics are in mutual tension and cannot be separated from one another.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the reforms called for in RuP were largely implemented through judicial policy; today they are a matter of course in everyday judicial life. Programmatically, this led to a redefinition of the magazine's objectives, which focused on selected topics relevant to social and legal policy. After reunification in the 1990s, the focus was on legal issues in the wake of German unification, such as B. the establishment of constitutional structures and a democratic judiciary in the new states as well as the restitution problem.

Since the turn of the millennium, current issues relating to public law have been discussed in an interdisciplinary manner in law and politics, and legally justified reform demands have been made. Topics were e.g. B. the deployment of the Bundeswehr abroad , data protection law , internet law , party law and voting rights as well as European legal developments. The gender and legal policy section was introduced in autumn 2015 . In cooperation with the German Association of Women Lawyers (DJB), RuP wants to contribute to the realization of equal rights and equality for women in all areas of society.

Since January 2017, a new editorial area of responsibility has been the documentation of legally important opinions of the Advocate General at the European Court of Justice (ECJ). With this, RuP wants to take into account the growing importance of the decisions of the ECJ for the national level in terms of legal policy.
