Right Opposition (Georgia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Right Opposition ( Georgian მემარჯვენე ოპოზიცია / Memarjvene Opozicia ) is an electoral coalition of two center-right - parties of Georgia , the New Conservative Party and the party Industry will save Georgia . The chairman is the entrepreneur Dawit Gamqrelidse .

The right opposition forms two opposition factions in the Georgian parliament: the right opposition and the industrialists . However, their parliamentary influence is weak. In the elections on March 28, 2004 , the alliance received 7.96% of the vote and 17 MPs. It thus achieved parliamentary group status, but it is neither represented on the parliamentary bureau, nor does it hold a committee chair. The opposition is also not represented in the parliamentary committee of stewards, which is supposed to monitor the work of the interior and defense ministries on issues that are to be kept secret.

Although the supporters of the alliance had opposed the Rose Revolution , their popularity with the regular voters from the Georgian educational middle class did not suffer. Together New Rights and Industry won Georgia will save more votes in 2004 than the Industrialists' Party in 1999 alone. At that time, the center-right party received 7.1% of the vote. The party occupies eight of 49 seats in the Tbilisi City Council .

The Right Opposition wants to maintain and expand private property in Georgia. It opposes plans to reverse or reorganize the privatization of state-owned companies. She calls for tax cuts and a reform of the Georgian tax system so that transparency and tax honesty increase and the state budget is balanced. In parliament, she campaigns against the persistent human rights violations by the law enforcement authorities, including under Mikheil Saakashvili's presidency . In terms of foreign policy, the Right Opposition calls for an exit from the Commonwealth of Independent States and integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures. She calls for the creation of a South Caucasian economic zone.

The New Conservative Party (also Nowas , Georgian ახალი მემარჯვენეები / Achali Memardschweneebi ) was founded in June 2001 . In 2003, the Liberal Party of Georgia joined her . Party leader is Dawit Gamqrelidse. He was the founder and long-time president of Aldag Insurance Company, one of the largest companies in Georgia. Since April 22, 2004 he has also been the leader of the Right Opposition faction in the Georgian Parliament . The party has its own youth organization, Georgia's Young Rights , with around 3,000 members in 64 cities and districts.

The Industry will save Georgia party (also industrialists , Georgian მრეწველობა გადაარჩენს საქართველოს / Mrezweloba Gadaartschens Sakartwelos ) was originally founded in 1999 as a business people's party . The chairman is the entrepreneur Gogi Topadze. He is the founder of the Kazbegi Brewery in Tbilisi . Topadze belongs to the older generation of Georgian business people.

At the parliamentary by-elections on October 1, 2005 , the parties of the New Right formed an electoral alliance with the Conservative Party , the Georgian Workers' Party and the Freedom Movement .
