The use, possession, and sale of cannabis in the United States is prohibited by federal law. Yet so far eleven of the 50 American states have legalized cannabis as an intoxicant for people aged 21 and over.

The states where cannabis is legal for anyone over the age of 21 are Alaska , California , Colorado , Oregon , Maine , Massachusetts , Michigan , Nevada , Vermont , Washington (state), and Illinois . In addition, the federal district and seat of government of Washington DC, as well as Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, have legalized the private use of cannabis. Thirteen other states and the US Virgin Islands have decriminalized the use of cannabis. In addition, 33 of the 50 US states, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Federal District of Washington, DC have legalized the use of cannabis as a medicinal product (as of April 2019).

The House of Representatives Legal Committee passed a bill to legalize cannabis at the federal level in November 2019. However, the draft is not given any great chances at the moment - partly because of the negative attitude of Donald Trump , who would ultimately have to sign the law.

In New Mexico , the House of Representatives voted by a narrow majority in March 2019 to legalize cannabis as an intoxicant. The Senate also voted in favor in January 2020.

In the states of New York and New Jersey , the respective governments are preparing to legalize cannabis as an intoxicant. In New Jersey, the question of legalization is to be voted on at the same time as the presidential election in November 2020. In Arizona and Montana, too, a vote on legalizing marijuana will be held at the same time as the 2020 presidential election.

66 percent of the American population are in favor of a nationwide and nationwide legalization of cannabis, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center in 2019.
