Red Eclesial Panamazónica , ( Repam for short ; English Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network ), is a transnational network in the Amazon basin . The aim is for the nine regional Catholic churches in the Amazon to be active against the ongoing destruction of nature and for the promotion of the rights and dignity of people living in the Amazon.

overview

Over a thousand organizations from the Amazon basin have joined the network in local, national and international bodies, communities, institutions and as specialized teams from Brazil , Venezuela , French Guiana , British Guiana , Suriname , Columbia , Ecuador , Peru and Bolivia . In particular, projects for the protection of human rights are pursued by over 390 indigenous peoples and a different approach to the habitats in the Amazon region. The focus is on the development of alternative economic models that privileges the poor and serves the common good. Human rights violations and attacks on indigenous peoples are publicly prosecuted.

The network is committed to using flat hierarchies without new institutions and superfluous bureaucracy. Organizational and coordinative matters are handled by existing institutions such as the Latin American Bishops 'Conference CELAM or the “Commission for the Amazon” of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference CNBB . The president of Repam is Claudio Cardinal Hummes , who also heads the Brazilian Bishops' Commission for the Amazon. The general secretary is Mauricio López, director of Caritas in Ecuador.

Repam's concrete work includes, for example:

  • Making indigenous leaders heard on the world stage: Repam supports encounters between leaders of indigenous peoples and the EU, UN, etc.
  • Creation of a rights promotion school to train community leaders and pastors in their human and environmental rights.
  • Support for human rights defense cases: Repam attended a hearing at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) as a lawyer to defend the territorial property rights of local communities.
  • Dialogue between the Church and the communities of indigenous peoples. Repam also seeks to reach communities that the church may not have easy access to.
  • Protection for the 137 “contactless tribes” of the Amazon and confirmation of their right to live undisturbed.
  • Mapping of the Amazon
  • Communication: radio programs for sharing the messages of the encyclical Laudato Si

founding

Repam was founded in 2014 by bishops, priests, religious and lay people from the Amazon region. The background was that convened by Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Specified Fifth General Conference in Aparecida of the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM) , which took place from May 13 to 31, 2007 in Aparecida , Brazil. The participants complained that the Amazon “only serves the economic interests of transnational corporations”; they committed themselves to the Latin American Church to serve the poor and to accuse injustice. The then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who is now Pope Francis, was largely responsible for the final document . The Aparecida document primarily focuses “on the weakest links in society: youth, the elderly and migrants, indigenous peoples, prisoners and women. Latin America should also become a model for reconciliation, justice and peace beyond its borders. "

The encyclical Laudato si ' , which Pope Francis published in 2015 on the topics of environmental and climate protection as well as social injustices and the depletion of natural resources, and the 2019 Amazon Synod, provide significant support .
