The Episcopal Action Adveniat (from Latin Adveniat regnum tuum "Your kingdom come" from the Lord's Prayer ) is the Latin America - aid organization of the Catholic Church in Germany . The legal and property holder is the Bischöfliche Aktion Adveniat eV in Essen. Since March 1st 2017 Father Michael Josef Heinz, who belongs to the order of the Steyler Missionaries, has been the general manager.

history

For the first time, the German Bishops' Conference decided on Christmas 1961 to carry out a special collection “for the pastoral needs in Latin America”. The willingness to donate and the many requests for help from Latin America prompted the German Bishops' Conference to call for a Christmas collection again in the following years. In 1969 the German bishops decided to make the collection for Latin America an annually recurring action by the Catholic Church in the Federal Republic, the Episcopal Action Adveniat . From 1977 to 1988 Emil Stehle (1926–2017) was the general manager of the relief organization; he went to Ecuador as a bishop from 1987 to 2002.

With around 3,000 projects a year with a total volume of 45 million euros, it is Europe's largest aid campaign for Latin America and the Caribbean . The most important criterion for project funding by Adveniat is poverty orientation. The initiative comes from local priests, religious or lay people who live and work with the inhabitants of the slums, the street children, the victims of natural disasters and epidemics. In 2013/14, the vast majority of the expenditure (25.05% of the approved funds) went to projects in Brazil . Then came Colombia with 8.52%, Haiti with 7.71% and Peru with 7.04% and Ecuador with 5.43%.

Structure and appreciation

The organization is appointed by the German Bishops' Conference for five years Episcopal Commission Adveniat passed as meeting of the association. The current chairman is the Essen diocesan bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck . Previously these were Felix Genn , Franz Grave and Franz Hengsbach . The office in Essen with over 90 employees from all over the world is responsible for ongoing administrative operations.

In 2005/2006, the auditing company PricewaterhouseCoopers counted Adveniat among the three most transparent non-profit organizations in Germany.

financing

The 2018 annual financial statements show income of EUR 49.5 million. Of which EUR 24.8 million from the Christmas collection. According to the relief organization, more than 90 percent of the donations flow directly into the local projects, and 6.2 percent are used for administrative tasks. The organization has been the bearer of the DZI donation seal since 1992 .

Adveniat annual promotions

The term Adveniat-Aktion is understood as a series of events that the Latin America Aid Organization Adveniat organizes during Advent in cooperation with numerous dioceses in Germany to draw attention to the needs in Latin America and the work of the Aid Organization and to attract donations. The annual campaigns of the relief organization set a focus for the Advent season. Events, lectures, exhibitions and church services are intended to highlight the particular problem. In addition to focal points that relate to individual countries in Latin America (e.g. Bolivia in 2002), overarching topics such as justice or poverty (2009) are also addressed. The 2015 annual campaign was based on the theme of peace and is illustrated using the example countries of Colombia and Guatemala. Under the motto "Protect our common house", Adveniat placed the endangered creation and the threatened peoples of the Amazon region at the center of its Christmas campaign 2016.

The high point of the annual campaign is the Christmas collect , which takes place on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in all Catholic parishes in Germany.
