The Red River Gorge ( English gorge = gorge ) is part of a canyon system of the eponymous river in central east Kentucky in the United States .

Much of its catchment area (113 km²) was purchased as part of the Daniel Boone National Forest and declared a National Natural Landmark .

The area is characterized by high sandstone cliffs , waterfalls and 41 natural bridges .

Due to the many very steep sandstone cliffs, the Red River Gorge has become a climbing area with worldwide attention.
