Redcastle ( Scottish Gaelic : Caisteal ruadh ), historically also Edirdovar or Ederdour , is the ruin of a medieval low castle in Killearnan on the Black Isle in the Scottish administrative unit Highland . Redcastle was named after the red sandstone it was built from and is now in ruins, but Historic Scotland has listed it as a Category B Historic Building.
history
Redcastle was until recently one of the oldest inhabited buildings in Scotland. King Wilhelm the Lion had the first castle built on this site in 1179; she was called Edirdovar . In 1230 Sir John Bysset held the castle and in 1278 Sir Andrew de Besco . In 1455 the Black Isle was taken by the Scottish Crown.
In 1492 the castle and lands were under the control of Kenneth Mackenzie, 7th of Kintail , and they remained in the hands of the Clan Mackenzie until 1790 . The current building dates back to 1641 and was remodeled in the 19th century by architect William Burn . In 1838 Colonel HD Baillie bought the property and it became the property of Lord Burton of Dochfour's family . During the Second World War , the castle was requisitioned by the army and finally abandoned and partially demolished in the 1950s.
