history

Redcoon GmbH was founded in 2003 by the former MediaMarkt manager Reiner Heckel. Sales in the 2007/2008 financial year were EUR 138 million, and EUR 354 million in the 2009/2010 financial year. In 2011 and 2012 sales stagnated at EUR 432 million annually.

In March 2011, the takeover by Media-Saturn-Holding ( Ceconomy ) became known, which so far had not been able to successfully set up its own online shop. The purchase price was EUR 125 million. The Media-Saturn-Holding fully took over the online retailer redcoon in June 2013. redcoon founder Reiner Heckel sold his remaining ten percent stake in the company and left the management at the same time.

In 2011 and 2013, the German advertising council reprimanded redcoon for its advertising.

In April 2017, the site was temporarily taken offline, which Redcoons justified with an intended reorganization of the service. A little later it was available again with an assortment that from then on came from a joint product database with Mediamarkt.de and Saturn.de.

Later it became known that the Media-Saturn-Holding , which wanted to expand its own Internet trade with the purchase in 2011 and is successful with the Internet offerings under its name, would aim to reverse the purchase. She also wanted to assert the damage she suffered from alleged antitrust violations against the previous owners and therefore filed a lawsuit (amount in suit: around EUR 300 million). A first judgment was made in favor of Metro against an old owner.

In August 2017, Manager Magazin reported that Redcoon was involved in an illegal sales tax carousel. There was a risk of additional tax claims of up to EUR 64.4 million.

The magazine also reported high losses from Redcoons: There was a gross profit loss of around 45.2 million in the 2015/2016 financial year. The EBIT loss rose to EUR 120.3 million in the same financial year.

In May 2018, Media-Saturn finally took Redcoon.de offline and the site has been fully integrated into MediaMarkt.de since then. The presence in Austria Redcoon.at instead refers to the website of Saturn Austria, while the Polish branch continued, but was also discontinued on March 31, 2020.
