The Redlichiina are next to the Olenellina one of the two suborders of the trilobite order Redlichiida . They are made up of the three superfamilies Emuelloidea , Paradoxidoidea and Redlichoidea .
description
(Morphological terms are explained in more detail in the Trilobites article )
Cephalon (head shield): The facial sutures (facial sutures) are ophistoparous. Early forms usually have conically tapering glabels, the furrows of which extend far back. In late forms, the glabella expands forward to form a bulging frontal lobe. The hypostome is either conterminant (as in Redlichia ) or natant (as in Dolerolenus ). The rostral plate is narrower than in the suborder Olenellina and is bordered by rostral and weld lines.
Thorax (breastplate): Characteristic are the many segments (more than 60 in an emuellid). Spines can occasionally attach to the spindle.
Pygidium (tail shield): Usually very small, but in some species it can be larger and include several segments.
phylogenesis
The Redlichiina appear for the first time in the Lower Cambrian and are therefore very old trilobites. They died out again at the end of the Middle Cambrian - but may have developed into the Ptychopariida order beforehand .
Systematics
- Superfamily Emuelloidea
- Superfamily Paradoxidoidea
-
Superfamily Redlichioidea
- Abadiellidae
- Chengkouaspidae - including Bathynotidae
- Dolerolenidae
- Gigantopygidae
- Kuechowiidae
- Mayiellidae
- Menneraspididae
- Metadoxididae
- Neoredlichiidae - as the Neoredlichiinae subfamily of the Redlichiidae
- Redlichiidae
- Saukiandidae
- Yinitidae
- Yunnanocephalidae - are mostly placed among the Ptychopariida
The systematic position of the Bathynotidae has not yet been clarified, but due to the similarities of their upper armor, they are usually placed with the Chengkouaspidae.
