The Reformed Church Adliswil is one of the two main churches in the Zurich municipality of Adliswil . It was rebuilt in 1897/98 and is located on a hill spur south of the village center, above the eastern bank of the Sihl . The cemetery and the abdication hall are in the immediate vicinity. The Adliswil Catholic Church is to the north opposite the village center and on the other side of the Sihl.

The church, built by the architect Reber, is a B-object (middle of the three protection levels) under cantonal monument protection.

history

The Evangelical Reformed parish of Adliswil was only founded in 1896. The establishment was the result of a cantonal referendum . Before that, the believers belonged to the parish of Kilchberg . Immediately the planning of their own church was tackled and soon after the construction could begin. The consecration of the church took place on 31 July 1898th

Building

The interior of the church

The cross-shaped church faces south and has a 50 meter high steeple. The church tower is attached to the northeast end of the nave and houses four bells and a tower clock. The interior is kept rather simple and was last redesigned in the early 1960s. In the center is the granite font. The choir is designed in the shape of a staircase. A large gallery is built into the northern nave and the two side galleries in the aisles can be reached via parapets. The east side gallery houses the organ with 26 registers, which was built in 1961. The windows are designed as painted glass windows, the choir window was only made in 1961, while the others are still the original glass windows from 1898.

Bells and tower clock

The bells were cast by the Rüetschi bell foundry in Aarau . They were brought to the tower and raised by 713 school children on November 13, 1897. The four bells do not have names, but sayings.

Bell no. 1 is the largest at 2,250 kg and has the pitch C. Its motto is "Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth". In addition, it bears an inscription that indicates that the Adliswil parish was founded in January 1896, based on a cantonal referendum.

Bell No. 2 weighs 1,110 kg and has the pitch E. Its motto is "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord" [ sic ].

Bell no. 3 weighs 700 kg and has a G pitch. Its motto is "Call me in times of need"

Bell No. 4 originally weighed 280 kg and had the pitch C '. However, it was melted down in 1946 and replaced by a new 500 kg bell with the pitch A. The motto of both bells is "Come to heavenly rest, I call to the deceased little ones".

The bell was electrified before the Second World War, but until 1957 it was still possible to ring the bell manually with ropes. In the 1990s, a remote control for the bell was installed. The hour chime is triggered by striking a hammer. Bells 2 and 3 are used for the quarter-hour strike and bell 1 for the hour-strike.

The hour chime is controlled by the mechanical tower clock, which was manufactured in 1897 by the Mäder company in Andelfingen . The movement is still in its original condition and has to be regularly adjusted by hand. Because the pendulum can warp due to the temperature differences. In 1965, an electro-automatic weight elevator was installed only for the weights of the quarter and hour strike.

The clock faces of the tower clock are located above the bell chamber in the triangular gable of the roof on all four sides of the tower. Their diameter is 2.8 meters. The digits and hands are gold-plated and were re-attached in 1993, the old hands are housed inside the tower. The dial backgrounds are blue today, before the exterior renovation in 1993 they were red.

Stained glass window

The rose window above the main entrance

The original glass windows were made by Jakob Georg Röttinger in 1898 . The glass windows, kept in neo-Gothic style, are mainly filled with ornaments. The medallion in the middle window on the right shows the portrait of Huldrych Zwingli , that of Heinrich Bullinger on the left . A large rose window with a diameter of 4.3 meters is installed above the main portal, in the middle of which there is an angel with an older version of the Adliswil coat of arms.

The choir window was newly made in 1961 based on a design by Hans Peter Eber. It shows a stylistic dark globe with a yellow-orange glowing cross above it. It contains the verses Joh. 8,12, Matth. 28.20, Matth. 11:28 and John 16:33.

organ

The organ built into the choir after the church was built was a Goll organ with a pneumatic action and a romantic-orchestral register arrangement. This disposition was changed in 1939 and tuned according to newer principles, and a new used game table was installed. The poor pedal could not be extended due to lack of space. In the course of the planned renovation of the church, it was decided not to convert the Goll organ, which was felt to be defective, but to replace it with a new one. It was also decided to change the position of the organ from the choir to the left aisle.

The new organ was purchased from Metzler in Dietikon and was installed in 1961. It consists of 26 registers which control around 1700 pipes. There are three manuals. The organ, built in 1960, cost 69,400 Swiss Francs.
