The Reformed Church of Appenzell forms a unit together with the Reformed rectory. The building was constructed between 1908 and 1909. The church is located north of the Appenzell cemetery , while the Roman Catholic parish church of Appenzell is on its south side.

History of the parish

The land division of the canton of Appenzell in 1597 took place according to the denominations. The half-canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden was therefore of the Roman Catholic faith and most of the Reformed moved to the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. It was only with the end of the old Confederation and the separation of church and state introduced during the Helvetic Republic that members of the Reformed faith had the opportunity to live together on an equal footing in the Catholic-dominated Appenzell Innerrhoden. With the new constitution of the Swiss Confederation in 1848, freedom of belief was enshrined. In 1875, the Protestant Association was founded in Appenzell, which held its services in the town hall (Hautgasse 6) until 1881 and then in its own property at Hauptstrasse 11. Until the appointment of the first own clergyman, the services were mostly held by the Dean of Gais , Heinrich Jakob Heim . In 1890 Paul Eppler was called from Basel to Appenzell, who transferred the association to the Protestant-Reformed parish. With this the desire for a church of their own grew. In 1907, the architects La Roche & Stählin chose the project from two projects , with Adolf Stählin also taking on the construction management.

building

The building is kept in the homeland style. The church and the rectory form a unit and are built into one another. The building consists of the nave facing east , which meets the rectory at right angles. The choir is located in the rectory and takes up around a quarter of the area. Both parts of the building have an equally high roof ridge . While the roof of the rectory is designed as a hipped roof , the free side of the nave is designed as a gable roof . Above the entrance there is a roof turret with the bell on the nave . To the north of the nave, on the west side, a one-story dismantling is built in line with the ship. The entrance to the church has a sign. In the nave there is a vestibule under the gallery. Access to the gallery is via a staircase in the northern extension. Originally the vestibule was planned as an extension of the nave and separated from it with a window front. On the occasion of the renovation in 1973, which was carried out by Max Rohner from Herisau , the vestibule was converted into an inner vestibule. The choir was also redesigned and a new organ was installed.
