The Refuge des Grands Mulets is an alpine refuge of the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc section of the Club Alpin Français and an important base for the ascent of Mont Blanc .

The refuge des Grands Mulets located on the north edge of the Mont Blanc on a round of glacial of Bossons Glacier enclosed Felssporn at an altitude of 3051  m . It is mainly reached from the middle station of the Aiguille du Midi cable car ( Plan de l'Aiguille , 2310  m ) over the Glacier des Bossons, but there are also paths from Le Mont and from the portal of the Mont Blanc tunnel ( 1270  m) ) out to the hut. The trails have a high alpine character and are in some cases very vulnerable to stone and ice fall. They can be almost inaccessible when there is heavy vegetation in the Jonction glacier break below the hut. The last part of the ascent from the glacier to the hut is via an easy via ferrata .

The name Grands Mulets (German: "The big mules") is derived from the local dialect word moè or mouè for hill. This term was used to describe the rocks protruding from the ice; Later this term is meant to mulets verballhornt have been. In 1853 a first shelter was built here, which was replaced in 1866 by a new building, the so-called "pavilion". In 1896 another new building took place. The present hut made of prefabricated metal parts was built by the CAF in 1959 and 1960. At that time, the route over the hut was the most popular ascent to Mont Blanc, today the Refuge des Grands Mulets is an important base for ski mountaineering on Mont Blanc, especially in spring . In summer, the hut is often visited on the descent from Mont Blanc. It is usually open from late March to mid-September. There are climbing and ice climbing opportunities in the vicinity of the hut .
