The Refuge du Pelvoux is a refuge in the Briançon section of the Club Alpin Français (CAF) in the Pelvoux Mountains, at an altitude of 2704  m in the Hautes-Alpes department .

history

The first refuge, the Refuge de Provence , was built at this point by the CAF in 1877 . In 1892 this was replaced by a wooden refuge, the Refuge Lemercier , before the present hut was built in 1962.

The foundation stone was laid on June 14, 1961. The materials for the construction, with the exception of sand, which could be mined nearby, had to be delivered by helicopter. the hut was inaugurated on July 15, 1962.

location

The refuge is located at an altitude of 2,704 m on a ledge, in extension of the moraine at the end of the Glacier du Clot de Homme . The ascent to the refuge is from the hamlet of Ailefroide and takes 3½ hours.

The Refuge du Pelvoux is open from mid-June to mid-September, depending on the weather conditions as early as spring. Outside the service times of the refuge, water must be fetched from the outlet of the glacier (20 minutes' walk).

The refuge is used as a starting point for an ascent of Mont Pelvoux . It is also possible to climb the Aiguille de Sialouze and the Pic Sans Nom from here . It is used as a stopover when crossing the entire Pelvoux massif.
