The Mont Pelvoux is a mountain in the Haut-Dauphiné in the French western Alps . Its culmination point is the 3,946 m high Pointe Puiseux (western summit). In addition, the massif with the Pointe Durand (3,932 m), the Trois Dents du Pelvoux (3,682 m) and the Petit Pelvoux (3,753 m) has three other distinctive peaks . The slightly inclined glacier plateau of the Glacier du Pelvoux is embedded between the highest elevations , the ice masses of which flow away to the northeast in the crevice- rich Glacier des Violettes ou Veyro . The highest peaks are relatively easy to climb from the plateau . The plateau of the Glacier du Pelvoux can be reached most easily from the Refuge du Pelvoux , a CAF -Hütte the south of the mountain Stocks, by using Couloir Coolidge designated, 35 ° steep ice and Firnrinne , which itself is part of the Glacier de Sialouze is (difficulty » peu difficile «on the French rating scale, approx. 4 hours from the hut).

The Mont Pelvoux belongs to the Écrins massif (French Massif des Écrins) , the highest mountain group in the Alps that is so far south and west . When Savoy and Mont Blanc did not yet belong to France, Mont Pelvoux was considered the highest mountain in the country. Only the first to climb realized that the neighboring Barre des Écrins clearly towers over Mont Pelvoux. Because of this error, the entire mountain group is still often referred to as the Pelvoux .

The first ascent of Mont Pelvoux took place on July 30, 1828 by A. Durand and the two hunters Jacques Etienne Matéoud and Alexis Liotard. It is believed that they also hold the Pte. Climbed the Puiseux. The first secured ascent of the main summit, however, is dated August 9, 1848, when Victor Puiseux - accompanied by P. A. Barneoud to the Glacier du Pelvoux - reached the peak named after him.
