Puiseux

Life

Puiseux attended the school in Pont-à-Mousson and from 1834 the College Rollin in Paris, where he heard lectures from Charles-François Sturm . From 1837 he attended the École normal supérieure (ENS), where he made friends with Charles Auguste Briot and Jean-Claude Bouquet and graduated in 1840 as the best of his class. At that time he also attended lectures by Augustin Louis Cauchy . In 1841 he received his doctorate on celestial mechanics. From 1841 to 1844 he was professor of mathematics in Rennes and then until 1849 in Besançon . Meanwhile he published work on geometry and mechanics in Liouville's Journal. From 1849 to 1855 he was at the ENS, from 1855 to 1859 at the Paris Observatory , and in 1857 he became a professor of celestial mechanics after lecturing on behalf of Urbain Le Verrier . From 1862 to 1868 he taught at the ENS. From 1868 to 1872 he was with the Bureau des Longitudes .

Puiseux improved, among other things, Laplace's theory of the moon in celestial mechanics . But he is best known for his work in function theory following Cauchy, which, however, was overshadowed by the work of Bernhard Riemann during his lifetime . According to him, power series (developments Puiseux) named with fractional powers. He was the first to distinguish branch points , essentially singular places and poles .

In 1871 he was elected to the Paris Academy of Sciences ( Académie des sciences ).

Puiseux was also an avid alpinist. He was probably the first to climb the main peak of Mont Pelvoux and has been called Pointe Puiseux (3,946 m) ever since .

His son Pierre Henri Puiseux (1855–1928) was a well-known astronomer at the Paris Observatory, who u. a. Was co-author of a photographic lunar atlas. A moon crater is named after him (and not his father).
