Alternative seat in North Rhine-Westphalia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The alternative seat in North Rhine-Westphalia was a secret nuclear bunker in Kall - Urft in the Euskirchen district , North Rhine-Westphalia . In the event of a nuclear war , the prime minister , interior and justice ministers and 200 experts should seek protection and continue government affairs. Its function was concealed from the population of the surrounding villages with the name Warnamt Eifel .

Planning started in 1962. The complex is around 1,000 m² in size, measuring 35 × 29 × 16.2 meters. The entrance is camouflaged in a double garage of a “civil” residential building on the outskirts of Urft.

The bunker was always kept secret during operating hours. The residents of the area were told that it was a waterworks or a warning office . As a camouflage measure, the parts on the surface were painted green or covered with turf and then planted with trees.

In 1993 the bunker was abandoned and sold to a private owner, the son-in-law of the bunker caretaker. A visit to the original bunker, which is now a documentation center, is possible by appointment. There are also visits in combination with a visit to the government bunker in the Ahr valley .
