The alternative seat of the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate , also known as the protective bunker of the Rhineland-Palatinate state government , was in Alzey from 1979 to 1992 .

The bunker was built between 1979 and 1981 under the gym of the state advanced high school in Alzey . The two-story alternative seat of the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate is more than 1000 square meters and should have been sufficient for up to 30 days in the event of a nuclear crisis. The facility is around 36 kilometers from the state capital Mainz and can be reached via the federal motorway 63, which was completed in 1980 between Mainz and Alzey .

According to NATO specifications , regional governments had to take part in secret command post exercises from a nuclear bunker (see also: NATO command structure , Central Army Group ). During the exercises, food was provided by the school canteen .
