The government building resp. The old armory at Beckenstube 7 in the monastery district of Schaffhausen is the seat of the Government Council of the Canton of Schaffhausen and the State Chancellery . It adjoins the All Saints Minster and dates from 1617.

Building history

The building was almost completely rebuilt as an armory in 1617 on the site of a previous building. In 1854 the property was converted into barracks . As early as 1887, the ground floor was converted into a commercial hall. The largest renovation to date took place in the years 1912 to 1914. The interior was completely redesigned as the seat of the government council. At the same time, the two extensions, basin room 3 and 5, were built under the direction of architect Karl Moser . Today part of the cantonal administration and the cantonal prison are housed in them. Since the prison no longer meets today's requirements (as of 2011), there are plans to build a new cantonal security center outside the old town. The property in an attractive location in the monastery district of the old town of Schaffhausen could be used as new living space.

Building description

The renaissance front with an accentuated central axis is dominated by the massive portal . The architect, chief architect Johann Jacob Meyer, has immortalized himself in a name cartouche above the portal . Above that, the Schaffhausen coat of arms and a motto are attached. The steps of the stepped gable are decorated with figures of dragons and snails. The fountain in the courtyard was made by Otto Kappeler. Ernst George Rüegg decorated the connecting wing with the fresco "Exodus from a rifle guild".
