Local association of a special kind
A municipal association of a special kind is an amalgamation of a district and an independent city . This concept is also known as a regional district or regional association.
Local associations of a special kind in Germany are:
- Hanover region (since November 1, 2001) , legal successor to the Hanover district (March 1, 1974 to October 31, 2001) and the municipal association of Greater Hanover (January 1, 1963 to October 31, 2001)
- Regional Association Saarbrücken (since January 1, 2008) , legal successor to the Saarbrücken City Association (January 1, 1974 to December 31, 2007)
- City region of Aachen (since October 21, 2009) , legal successor to the Aachen district (January 1, 1972 to October 20, 2009)
In contrast to a district, the cities of Hanover and Aachen, which were merged with the former districts, still retained the status of an independent city.
