Regius Professor of English Literature (Aberdeen)
The Regius Professor of English Literature , also known as the Regius Chalmers Chair of English Literature or simply Chalmers Chair, is a Regius Professorship for English Literature at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland , founded in 1894 under Queen Victoria . In addition to this, there is also the Regius Professorship of English Language and Literature at the University of Glasgow for the subject of literature .
History of the professorship
Before the professorship, literature had been taught in Aberdeen as part of the rhetoric training in philosophy . In 1893, Queen Victoria ordered the establishment of an independent professorship on the condition that the teaching practice in philosophy would end. The new professor was charged with majoring in the history and criticism of English literature in prose and poetry, including Lowland literature.
At the end of 1894 Herbert Grierson, a recognized specialist in 17th century literature, took over the training. Since then, the chair has been occupied by selected specialists.
