Regius Professor of Medicine (Oxford)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Regius Professor of Medicine is a Regius Professorship in Medicine at Oxford University established by Henry VIII in 1546 (coinciding with the Regius Professorships in Law, Theology, Hebrew and Greek). She used to be called Regius Professor of Physic , after the old English term for doctor.

The Regius Professorship for Medicine was not always considered the most important medical professorship in Oxford. When Christopher Pegge was appointed Regius Professor in 1801 , a colleague praised him for his noble appearance and polite manners. But he quickly qualified this praise by describing Pegge's successor, John Kidd , as being straightforward in all things and without deception and as the first doctor who always renounced the wig and the wide-brimmed hat and never carried the cane with the golden end.
