Regla Leyén

Regla Leyén Zulueta (born November 3, 1979 in Sancti Spíritus ) is a former Cuban judoka who was third in the 2001 World Championship and second in the 2003 World Championship.

Athletic career

Regla Leyén fought in the light heavyweight division until 2000. In 1996 she won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships. In 1998 she was the first Cuban champion. In the same year she also won the U20 World Championships.

2001 Leyén switched to middleweight, the weight class up to 70 kilograms. In this weight class, she was Cuban champion from 2001 to 2003. At the World Championships in Munich, she lost to the Belgian Ulla Werbrouck in the quarter-finals . With two wins in the hope round she reached the battle for a bronze medal, which she won against the French Amina Abdellatif . Five weeks after the World Championships, she won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Beijing . In November 2001 Leyén won the Pan American Championships. In early 2002 she lost to the Japanese Masae Ueno in the final of the Tournoi de Paris . At the team world championships in Basel she won the silver medal behind the Japanese with the Cuban team. 2003 Leyén won the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. At the 2003 World Championships in Tokyo, she defeated the British Kate Howey in the semifinals . After her final defeat against Masae Ueno, she received the silver medal.

In early 2004, Regla Leyén moved to the United States. But there she was unable to continue her sporting successes.
