Wheel change

Radwechsel (fachsprachlich also plugging , commonly falsely as tire changing hereinafter) is the exchange of complete wheels ( tires on rims ) in motor vehicles, as well as in the change between summer and winter tires, tire punctures is made. In contrast to changing tires, you can change a wheel yourself. A lifting aid such as a jack is used to raise the vehicle . The wheel nuts are loosened and tightened using a cross wrench , a torque wrench or a comparable tool.

Unlike the wheel change is the tire change another tire on the rim raised, which usually only by specialists from a car repair shop can be performed or when a tire dealer.

Some car advisors recommend swapping the wheels for each other when changing wheels in order to compensate for any asymmetrical wear. In addition, directional tires are not allowed to be swapped left / right, as these - once mounted on rims - should only be used on the same side of the vehicle.

Since the tires on the drive axle are usually more worn, especially in front-wheel drive vehicles , it can also make sense to mount them on the other axle in the following season. For safety reasons, the better pair of tires should be mounted on the rear axle. This reduces the likelihood that the rear of the vehicle will break away, especially in winter.

This results in the following exchange strategies for non-directional tires:

  • Crosswise (left back against right front, right back against left front) : This is where the abrasion is best balanced, which may delay the need to buy new tires for a season.
  • Over the side (left rear against right rear, left front against right front) : With front-wheel drive, the replacement of the front tires is due a little earlier, while the rear tires are retained longer. Also recommended if a sawtooth profile occurs .
  • Combination of both : the front wheels are mounted on the same side to the rear; cross the rear wheels forward (or vice versa). This method results in a particularly even wear of the tread, since sooner or later every single tire passes through every assembly position on the vehicle.

Directional tires, on the other hand, must be changed across the axle (rear left against front left, rear right against front right) or must not be changed at all.

Tighten

The specified torques for tightening must be observed. Tire manufacturers and workshops recommend tightening the attached wheels after 50–100 km in order to reduce the risk of a possible wheel loss.

Changing wheels in literature

In 1957 Bertolt Brecht's famous poem Der Radwechsel was published .

There is a poem by Yaak Karsunke with the title Matti changes the bike .
