Reina-Valera
The Reina-Valera is a Spanish translation of the Bible that was first published in Basel , Switzerland , in 1569 . In Spanish it has the nickname "Biblia del Oso" (in German: Bible of the Bear ). It was not the first complete Spanish translation of the Bible. Spanish Bible translations existed for centuries, for example the Alfonsina Bible .
Emergence
The main translator of the Spanish Bible of 1569 was Casiodoro de Reina , an independent evangelical theologian. A manuscript found in the Bodleian Library also shows that the Spanish Bible was a community project. The translation was based on the Hebrew Masoretic text (Bomberg's edition, 1525) and the Greek Textus Receptus (Stephen's edition, 1550). As a secondary source, de Reina used the Ferrara Bible (for the Old Testament) and the Latin edition of Santes Pagnino . For the New Testament, the translations by Francisco de Enzinas ( El Nuevo Testamento de Enzinas ) and Juan Pérez de Pineda were used . The 1569 edition contained the apocryphal or deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament.
This Spanish translation of the Bible shaped the image of the Holy Scriptures among Spanish Protestants, much as the King James Version did in England.
First revisions
The Spanish Bible, like the English Bible, whose first translator was also unable to complete his work, went through numerous revisions early on .
The first revision in 1602 under the eyes of its editor Cipriano de Valera was printed in Amsterdam . As in the Luther Bible , the Apocrypha were moved to a separate section between the Old and New Testaments.
The next revision took place in 1862, others followed in 1909, 1960 and 1995. Modern Protestant Bible editions, as in Spain, often do without the Apocrypha.
Since the publication of the 1960 revision, there has been numerous debates among conservative Christian groups using the Reina Valera Bible. Nonetheless, this revision became the authoritative Bible for many millions of Spanish-speaking Christians around the world. Almost all Spanish fundamentalists use it, despite further attempts at revision.
Other revisions
- The Purified Bible, created in 1602 in Monterrey, Mexico.
- Another revision of the Valera Bible was made in 1865 by Dr. Ángel H. de Mora from Spain created and then printed by the American Bible Society . The American Bible Society reprinted this Valera edition until the 1950s. In 2000, it was reprinted by local ecclesiastical Bible publishers in Lansing, Michigan and also by the Valera Bible Society of Miami, Florida.

- The Trinitarian Bible Society is currently working on a revision of the Valera Bible from 1909.
- In September 2009 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to publish its first official Spanish edition, based on the Reina Valera edition of 1909, with a very conservative update of the outdated grammar and vocabulary.
More recent revisions, like the 1995s, are often rejected by conservatives.
