The Reineke Island ( Russian Остров Рейнеке ) is a Russian island southwest of Vladivostok in the Peter the Great Bay , Sea of Japan . The island with a good 20 inhabitants is located in the Kaiserin Eugenie Archipelago, southwest of the Muravyov-Amurski Peninsula .
geography
The island is 4.6 km², its highest point is 148 m high. It is located around 16 kilometers from the Asian mainland. It is separated from the neighboring Popow Island to the north by a strait that is only 500 meters wide. The only inhabited settlement is on the north coast of the island. On the south coast of the island lies the wreck of the Castor , a German icebreaker from the Second World War.
history
The island was named after Michael von Reineke (1801-1859), a Baltic German Vice Admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy and a hydrograph in Russian service. An island of the same name in the Sea of Okhotsk was named after him.
