After Russky Island, Popov Island is the second largest in the archipelago. It was measured in 1862 during an expedition under Colonel WM Babkin and named in honor of the Russian admiral of the Imperial Russian Navy Popov . Some military fortifications to defend Vladivostok were built in the first third of the 20th century. The coastal battery No. 901, built between 1932 and 1933, is open to visitors. In the same period a fish canning factory was built because of the abundance of fish in the area. Almost the entire island population was employed there. A fur farm was opened in 1926 and the island developed into the industrial and scientific center of the area in the following years.

The relief is typical of the Primorye region . The highest point is 158 m. The coast is characterized by sand and pebble beaches with alternating rocky cliffs and slopes. The interior of the island is defined by hills and plains. Almost the entire territory is covered by deciduous forests. The fauna of the underwater world is diverse. Seals, dolphins, whales and more than 250 species of fish as well as mussels, crabs, sea urchins, shrimps etc. a. inhabit the coastal waters.

The island's climate is characterized by long cold winters and warm summers. The average temperature in January is −12.5 ° C, that of August +20.5 ° C.

The island has been developed for tourism and is the most visited island in Peter the Great Bay. There are some restaurants and rest homes on the island. The urban-type settlement of the same name in the southwestern part of the island and the village of Stark in the northern part inhabit around 1370 people. In the village of Popowa there is the Museum Nature of the Sea and its Protection of the Far Eastern Sea Nature Reserve . A mammoth copy is exhibited here, the original of which was excavated in 1977 in the Magadan permafrost, completely preserved. In the southern part there is a botanical garden . A marine research station of the Pacific Institute of the Far Eastern Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences is operated on an island in Alexeyev Bay .
