Reiner Klewen (born May 12, 1956 in Duisburg ; † September 5, 2010 ) was a German zoologist .

Life

The son of a Duisburg family was a teacher of biology at the Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium in Duisburg from 1978 to 1980 and at the St. Hildegardis-Gymnasium in Duisburg from 1980 to 1984.

Memorial to the work at the faculty in Dresden Pillnitz

From an early age he was interested in amphibians . In Duisburg, after completing his studies (state examination at the University of Cologne 1981) in zoology, botany and ecology , he undertook several researches on the ecology of industrial habitats, such as heavy metal dumps and heavily built-up or artificial bodies of water such as urban drainage systems, which were still in use in the 1970s of public planning were only considered from an industrial point of view. Klewen received his doctorate in 1986, after working at the Zoological Institute of the University of Cologne as a Dr. rerum naturalium . In 1988 he was appointed to the Academy for Ecological Research . From 1988 to 1993 he was a research assistant and lecturer at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal in the field of security technology / production.

Klewen undertook fundamental research in the northern Limestone Alps and the Dinaric Mountains, in particular on the alpine salamander . In addition to the ecology of karst mountains, there was another focus on the ecology of the tropics and deserts. There was research work mainly in Namibia and Mexico. In practice, he worked as an applied ecologist, environmental expert for traffic and industrial buildings and landscape planner, initially in Duisburg, later also in the Cologne and Leipzig area.

In 1993 he received the professorship for applied environmental protection and engineering ecology at the Dresden University of Technology and Economics . In addition to research work in the areas of population ecology , biodiversity and applied environmental protection as well as the supervision of diploma and doctoral theses, he offered a wide variety of courses in the subjects of applied environmental protection, ecology and zoology .

As a member of the founding commission of the Agriculture and Land Care Department, he accompanied the development of the course in 1993/94 with his experience from other educational institutions and the relocation of the course from Dresden to Pillnitz . At the traditional “green” location in Pillnitz, he successfully campaigned for cooperation between the local institutions, the State Institute for Horticulture and Agriculture, the Castle Park, and the fruit growing research institute. In addition to many other self-administration tasks at the university, which he took over, he was Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture / Land Management from 2006 to 2009.

Institute building in Seitschen

In 2002 he founded the Institute for Applied Environmental Protection in Saxony in an old manor in Seitschen in order to bring together his work and employees and to give graduates the opportunity to do further research. He was also instrumental in setting up the Homs-Saxonia Environmental Research Center in Homs (Syria).

His efforts led to the series of events “Pillnitzer Planner Talks” and after years of intensive work in 2008 he initiated the establishment of the “Green Forum Pillnitz”, a collaboration between the HTW, the Julius Kühn Institute , Schloss & Park Pillnitz and the State Office for Environment, Agriculture and geology.

The first Pillnitz Children's University took place in 2009, and he was the initiator and source of ideas, as well as the “News from Research and Science” series of events organized by the Pillnitz Green Forum, which has since been successfully aimed at laypeople and children.
