Reinhard Copyz

Reinhard Copyz (born May 7, 1959 in Bochum ) is a German musicologist and has been a professor of music psychology at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media since 1998 .

Life

Copyz first studied guitar with Werner Kämmerling at the Cologne University of Music and Dance . In 1981 he graduated with the artistic maturity examination and in 1982 with the concert exam . This was followed by studying musicology , psychology and ethnomusicology at the Technical University of Berlin . He received his doctorate in musicology in 1990 with an experimental study on mental practice with Helga de la Motte-Haber .

1990–1995 he was assistant for musicology at the Technical University of Berlin . From 1995 to 1998 he was a professor for systematic musicology at the University of Music in Würzburg . The habilitation in musicology took place at the Technical University of Berlin in 1998.

Copyz published a large number of essays and books that deal with the social psychology of music (e.g. football fan chants), the emotional impact of music (so-called goose bumps ), the handedness of musicians or instrumental virtuosity . He is particularly interested in the peculiarities of live playing by rock guitarists and especially the influence of the show factor on the audience's judgment. In 2000 he and the pianist Armin Fuchs carried out an extensive music-psychological project on the 28-hour piano piece Vexations by the French composer Erik Satie .

He was Vice President and President of the German Society for Music Psychology and from 2009 to 2012 President of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music (ESCOM). From 2012 to 2018 he was editor of the magazine “Musicae Scientiae”. He also heads the Hanover Music Lab , founded in 2009 , an institution of the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media for experimental music research.
