Reinhard Meyer (painter)

Reinhard Meyer (born May 23, 1951 in Wolgast ) is a German painter .

Life

Reinhard Meyer dealt with painting and music from an early age. In 1974 he did his military service in the NVA , during which he had to serve an eight-month prison sentence in the Schwedt military prison for political reasons. In 1976 he married Brigitte Meyer, both of whom chose to live in Zinnowitz on the island of Usedom . Before a planned trip to Prague, the couple had their identity cards and thus their exit documents withdrawn and they were required to report to the authorities. An exit from the Wolgast district was prohibited. Because of resistance to state violence Reinhard Meyer was sentenced to three years and three months in prison. It was not possible to study art, his artistic activity took place in secret. Admission to the Association of Fine Artists or exhibitions, which was important for the time of the GDR , was prohibited. From 1983 Reinhard Meyer worked as a freelance artist.

After the peaceful revolution in 1989, conditions improved. In 1991 Meyer became a member of the Künstlerbund Mecklenburg und Vorpommern eV and of the Usedomer Kunstverein eV In 1994 he received a one-year work grant from the Berlin Cultural Fund Foundation and had numerous exhibitions or participated in exhibitions. In 1999 the couple acquired a Wilhelminian style villa in the historic villa district in Zinnowitz and opened the Usedomer Kunsthaus Villa Meyer in 2002 .

Reinhard Meyer and his wife Brigitte have a daughter and a son.
