Reinhold A. Frowein

Reinhold Alexander Frowein (born October 5, 1923 in Bochum ) is a German neurosurgeon .

Frowein studied in Düsseldorf, where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1949 (trauma and brain tumor). In 1963 he completed his habilitation in Cologne, where he became professor for neurosurgery in 1969.

Among other things, he dealt with brain death , coma , traumatic brain injury , aneurysms , angiomas and herniated discs . With his teacher Wilhelm Tönnis , he presented criteria for brain death for coma patients in 1963, which then prevailed ( cerebral death ).

In 1994 he received the Wilhelm Tönnis Medal .
