Reinhold Böhme (born August 18, 1944 in Tuttlingen , † May 21, 2000 in Bochum ) was a German mathematician . He mainly dealt with functional analysis and partial differential equations , especially the plateau problem .

Life

After studying philosophy and mathematics in Hamburg and Göttingen , Böhme received his doctorate in 1971 under Erhard Heinz in Göttingen on the nonlinear perturbation of the isolated eigenvalues of self-adjoint operators . His habilitation in 1974, also with Heinz, dealt with the stability of minimal surfaces against disturbance of the edge curve . In the same year he became scientific advisor and professor in Erlangen , then in 1979 professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

plant

Böhme made contributions to the field of non-linear elliptic differential equations , especially with Friedrich Tomi and Anthony Tromba an index theorem with an approach of global analysis to the plateau problem . Later he researched surfaces with given curvature properties and the uniqueness proof of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations . In his lectures he placed great emphasis on the applications of mathematics in engineering and in mathematical physics . In addition, he was interested in philosophical and historical aspects of mathematics and logic .
