Rice bran wax

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rice bran wax , rice wax or rice oil wax is a vegetable wax obtained from rice oil is obtained.

properties

Rice bran wax is a yellowish white to orange-brown, hard, slightly crystalline substance and consists mainly of fatty acid esters of higher fatty alcohols , slightly palmitic acid and ceryl alcohol . The wax also contains free fatty acids as well as squalene and phospholipids . The wax content is usually greater than 96%.

The melting point of the raw wax is between 67 and 69 ° C, the saponification number is between 142 and 144; Purified wax melts at approx. 75 ° C, the saponification number is approx. 65–95, the acid number is <15 and the iodine number is <15. It is soluble in chloroform and benzene , and insoluble in water.

Extraction

Rice bran wax is obtained in the production of rice oil, raw rice oil contains approx. 3–6% wax, the wax is isolated by cooling the oil to 20–25 ° C or by winterizing , followed by filtration, or by centrifugation. Then it is either washed with solvents ( acetone , ethanol, etc.) and bleached , or hydrogenated .

Rice bran wax can also be saponified and easily deodorized .

use

Rice bran wax is mainly used for cosmetic purposes. It is used as a non-melting peeling wax , the particle size distribution of which can be adjusted over a wide range. The rice bran wax is micronized by dispersing it in water-solvent mixtures at an elevated temperature, followed by cooling, filtration and drying. Micronized wax particles are obtained over a wide range of particle sizes.

Rice bran wax is also a source of policosanols with fatty alcohols of 24 to 36 carbon atoms per molecule.
