Riding breeches are trousers that are suitable for riding horses due to their cut and material .

Trim

Breeches are characterized either by a patch on the inside of the knee (knee patch), or by an insert in the entire seat surface (full seat). The trimmings protect the fabric and the buttocks and ensure a good hold. A knee patch can consist of leather , synthetic leather or fabric. A full seat consists of either leather or synthetic leather. Good leather has a very long shelf life with appropriate care. Since it becomes hard when washed, it has to be creamed after washing or made supple by rubbing, stretching or kneading. In the case of an unknown synthetic fiber trim , no statement can be made about the durability, since high-quality synthetic leather, which is almost indestructible and sometimes even bi-elastic, but also inferior synthetic leather with a low durability (less than one season) are on the market, which can hardly be distinguished for the inexperienced . Some imitation leathers provide such a good hold in the saddle that you can no longer sit down if you slip. Some riders prefer smooth cloth trousers with knee leather that slide on the saddle and thus allow a lot of freedom of movement, others choose full seat trousers that offer more support.

material

In summer, breeches made of cotton fabrics with a proportion of elastic synthetic fibers, such as elastane , are popular. Cotton trousers are comfortable to wear, but often not durable. Synthetic fibers are elastic and often very durable. Ribbed fabrics are usually robust. There are also breeches that are modeled on jeans fabrics. In winter, riding breeches made of softshell , corduroy and thermal breeches with full seat or ski pants are often used. However, contact with the horse is worse in thermal breeches or ski pants . They are more suitable for riding and less for sporty jumping or dressage riding .

cut

A good fit is important for all breeches . It is also advantageous to wear long underwear in winter . Depending on the riding style and intended use, there are different cuts.

Boots Breeches be with riding boots or chaps worn. They are mainly made of elastic fabrics and cut close to the legs.

Breeches are cut wide on the thigh and are usually made of solid fabrics. There are also full leather breeches without trimmings, which are also cut wide on the thigh. Whole leather breeches are used for hunting and classic riding .

Jodhpur pants are mostly straight cut and are worn with ankle boots . However, there is also a classic cut with wide thighs. A bar under the foot prevents it from sliding up. The Jodhpur trousers is the recreational riding , trail riding and trail riding as well as in transition horse riding used.

Kentucky Jodhpurs are worn at American Saddlebred Shows. They are close-fitting, very long and have a web under the foot to prevent the pant leg from sliding up. They are wider at the ankle and so fit over the Jodhpur ankle boots. The leg is longer on the back so that the leg looks longer.

For western riding , special riding jeans are used that have particularly flat seams on the inside. Chaps are often worn for this.

history

Riding breeches used to be uncomfortable pieces of clothing, as they were made very tightly from the usual, inelastic outer fabrics. In historical images they look similar to today's riding breeches made of elastic fabric. Breeches have a wide balloon from knee to waist and are cut tight from knee to ankle, making them very comfortable. When Prince Albert, who later became King Edward , traveled to India, breeches first established themselves as comfortable riding breeches in the English and later throughout the European aristocracy and were widely used in Europe as riding and boot trousers in the first half of the 20th century. They were very popular between 1910 and 1945 in the civil and uniform sectors and were also common for women in agriculture and equestrian sports. Until then, women's pants were uncommon. With the advent of elastic fabrics around 1960, equestrian sports returned to the old-fashioned cut, but without the old complaints.

Riding leggings

Riding leggings have been on the market in Germany around 2016, and they have been in use in the Netherlands for some time. Compared to classic breeches, their material is thinner and more elastic. They are cut like sports pants, with an elastic waistband without a fastener. They do not have a sewn-on trim, but only a printed grip trim made of PU or silicone , either as full grip or as knee grip, and often have large pockets on the thigh especially for a mobile phone .

There are sportier riding leggings made of polyamide with elastane , which are cut like running pants, sometimes with breathable mesh inserts. They usually consist of breathable, quick-drying material. They are suitable for recreational riding in summer. However, they are less durable than classic breeches. Another variant is the riding leggings made of cotton with elastane, which are reminiscent of sweatpants with a drawstring in the waistband. It is particularly comfortable and less suitable for sporty riding.
