The tailstock is a component of many grinding , turning or (rarely) milling machines . The tailstock is used for supporting long workpieces by means of a centering point , which in the end face is introduced into the workpiece centering engages.

To cut an external thread with cutting and tapping tools, a workpiece is clamped into the chuck of a lathe and a cutting tool is clamped between the workpiece and the tailstock.

Conventional machines have a quill in the tailstock with a Morse taper mount for a drill chuck or a collet . In this way centric bores can be produced. Centering points can also be used to support shafts.
