Release Me (German about: Let go of me ) is an English-language pop song, which was written by Alex Callier to a tune from him and Luca Chiaravalli. The group Hooverphonic, currently with the singer Luka Cruysberghs, should represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam with this title .

In October 2019, the Flemish broadcaster VRT announced that Hooverphonic would represent Belgium in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. As is customary in Belgium, the broadcasters in the Flemish and Walloon regions take turns choosing a representative for the competition every year. The internal selection was retained for cost reasons.

Music and lyrics

The song is kept at a moderately slow pace. The music starts with the first verse, sung by Luka Cruysberghs. The title begins with a verse , followed by the first and only stanza. Then the chorus is sung twice, but interrupted by the verse. Finally an outro follows. The phrase "Release Me" is recited a total of fifteen times. The instrumentation is carried by the guitar in the first part of the title. The drums join the second verse, the strings join the chorus.

Alex Callier states that the song is about saying goodbye. He wrote it at a time when his father was terminally ill. Nevertheless, the statement should be viewed universally, namely that everyone has to say goodbye to a friend, a family member or a lover.

Alex Callier, the group's bass player, was already involved as a writer on the track “A Matter of Time” (Belgium 2018). Luca Chiaravelli wrote and arranged several songs for the Sanremo Festival , including Occidentali's Karma (Italy 2018).

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Belgium should have performed with this song in the first semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.
