The Reliance Building is a high-rise in the US city of Chicago and was the first skyscraper whose facade was mainly clad with glass.

architecture

The building was built in two phases. The ground floor and first floor were designed by John Wellborn Root . The floors above were built by Charles B. Atwood , who succeeded "John Root", who died in 1891, in Daniel Hudson Burnham's architectural office . The change can be seen in the architecture. The basement is clad in dark and without ornaments, while the facade of the 13 office floors is open and transparent. Atwood uses the so-called Chicago window, in which a large pane of glass is placed in front of the facade level, while two narrow panes can be opened on the sides.
