Rembrandt - Genius in Search

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rembrandt - Genius in Search was the world's largest exhibition on the four hundredth birthday of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn in 2006. In cooperation of the Berlin Gemäldegalerie with the Museum Het Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam and the Rembrandt Research Project under the direction of Ernst van de Wetering , it was elaborately designed to present the public with the latest state of Rembrandt research. The first stop of the exhibition was the Museum Het Rembrandthuijs in Amsterdam, where it was shown on a small scale from April 1, 2006 to July 2, 2006. From August 4, 2006 to November 5, 2006, it was presented to a much larger extent in the Berlin Gemäldegalerie.

82 paintings by Rembrandt and his circle were shown, covering all of the artist's creative phases. The focus of the presentation, however, was on the time after the creation of the famous "Night Watch" , which was represented in the exhibition by a copy by Gerrit Lundens from the London National Gallery . The pictures were lent by museums and private collectors from all over the world. Some of the works were shown publicly for the first time, including a whole series of pictures that have only been recognized or rediscovered as works of Rembrandt in recent years. The new discoveries, first exhibited under Rembrandt's name, include two tronies , a “woman with a white hood” from a private collection and the “study of a crying woman” from the Detroit Institute of Arts .

There were just over 200,000 visitors in Berlin. The exhibition was concluded on November 6th with a closed symposium of Rembrandt experts from all over the world, at which the latest, mostly unpublished opinions on the addition and depreciation of works were discussed.
