Willem Drost (baptized April 19, 1633 in Amsterdam , † after February 25, 1659 in Venice ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

Drost was an important student of Rembrandt . His life and work have only been explored in more depth since the 1980s. Only recently has research been able to determine the approximate date of birth and death. Much of the records about his person are still based on communications from the art biographer Arnold Houbraken .

In the late 1640s, Drost was a student of Rembrandt. After completing his training, he traveled to Italy, where he worked with his painter colleague Jan van der Meer the Elder. J. is detectable. In Rome he met the Munich painter Johann Carl Loth , with whom he became friends and whom he later followed to Venice . Together they created a series with depictions of the evangelists, which can be traced back to 1709 in the Giorgio Bergonzi collection.

A source that cites the presence of a painter with the name “Drost” as a witness when the inventory of Jan van Spyckoort's painting collection in Rotterdam on December 23, 1680, probably refers to another man of the same name, perhaps a Pieter Drost.

The exceptionally high quality of the few signed works prompted research to assign him a few more high-quality works that were earlier attributed to Rembrandt himself, his workshop or his successor. Today Willem Drost is considered one of the most gifted successors of Rembrandt.
