René-Albert Kieffer (born April 5, 1876 in Paris ; † September 8, 1963 there ) was a French bookbinder , publisher and bookseller .

René Kieffer attended the École supérieure des arts et industries graphiques (ESAIG or École Estienne ) in Paris. Under the guidance of Marius-Michel the Younger , he learned the craft of bookbinding in his workshop before running his own workshop in Paris in 1901. He also covers in the style of Art Deco ago that Pierre Legrain for the fashion designer Jacques Doucet had designed.

In 1909 he expanded his activities with the help of experienced editors such as Auguste Blaizot, Georges Crès and Albert Messein to the publishing industry, where he mainly published works by classic authors as luxury editions. Kieffer's workshop was particularly active in the 1920s and 1940s. Here he worked with engravers and illustrators such as Pierre Brissaud, Joseph Hémard, Sylvain Sauvage, Jacques Touchet and Jean-Baptiste Vettiner.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Kieffer finally ran a bookstore in Paris' Rue Saint-André-des-Arts , which was later taken over by his family. He was married to Lucile Bucquet. Her son Michel Kieffer (* 1916) was also a bookbinder. After René Kieffer's death in 1963, his remains were laid to rest in a columbarium in the Père Lachaise cemetery .
